senior couple with globe is a trip that may include an e-bike tour.

Over the past two years, travel to far-away places has been limited by the spread of the Covid virus and the numerous related travel restrictions imposed.  During the last year, my e-biking focused on local rides and trying great trails in the Banff region of Alberta and the Columbia Valley in British Columbia.  While these were enjoyable, I look forward to being able to travel more widely and experience e-biking in different areas of the world.

With a new year upon us, it is a great time to start planning new travel adventures that include e-biking experiences. This may be an organized bike tour or freestyle adventures in another country.  With the increasing popularity of e-bikes globally, new e-biking tour opportunities can be found just about everywhere. But it takes a little work to discover where to go and how to add e-biking to your travel plans.

New E-biking Touring Content

To help identify some of these unique e-bike touring opportunities, I am adding a travel portion to my blog.   I’ll be reaching out to e-biking bloggers and travel experts around the globe. Based on their experience, e-bike touring and related travel experiences unique to different regions will be highlighted. I hope this information will increase your interest in adding this activity to your next travel adventure.

My goal is to share unique content to engage your interest and identify new travel opportunities.   Whether it is an e-bike tour on the South Island of New Zealand, exploring the wonders of Japan, exploring the history of Europe by bike or taking in unique e-biking North American adventures, I’ll share them on a regular basis as I discover these cycling adventures.

European E-bike Touring

My first e-biking tour content comes from a Scot who lives in Austria.  Lindsey Cairns has been exploring Europe on her e-bike for several years. She brings the perspective of an average e-biker and identifies many e-biking touring experience to get you excited. Check out her E-bike-Europe blog for a variety of tour suggestions.

E-biking in Austria

While reviewing Lindsey’s blog. I was intrigued by the Strawberries and Poppies tour she recently highlighted.  But I will let her tell you more about this tour.

I was keen to explore an area of Austria that I was unfamiliar with. To start, I literally closed my eyes, pointed to a place on the map and decided this was where I wanted to explore.  We set off with no real plan in place – just armed with maps and a sense of adventure.

To start, we traveled by train via Linz then onto Ansfelden.  Trains in Austria are very convenient for cyclists.  I actively encourage you use trains while you are here. The rail network here is punctual and efficient with plenty of spaces for bikes on board.  Travel by rail offers very good value and is more environmentally friendly,

The great thing about this short tour is that you get the beauty of the farmland as well as the impressive “Kalk” mountains. I recommend you take this tour in May or June or late summer to see the best of the farmland and the diversity of the crops that are grown in this area.

If you are looking for a longer tour, you can make this a ‘detour’ from the Danube route from Passau Germany to Vienna. Or use it as a starting point to explore the beautiful Salzkammergut area.

The Salzkammergut or “Lake District” of Austria is a beloved area for Austrians and tourists during the summer. The stunning scenery with a mixture of lakes and mountains makes it an intoxicating mix for cyclists with well-signposted bike paths. And more photo opportunities than you will ever need.

I use “Bikeline” books which are available online and in book shops all over Europe. They cover both the Danube bike tour which is in three sections and the Salzkammergut which has a selection of tours around the area and you can take these individually or join up the tours in order to fill a two week cycling holiday.

Whatever you decide, a cycling holiday in Austria is definitely something to put on your list.”

My wife and I have taken a bike and boat trip along the Danube that included cycling in Austria.  It is a region on our “to ride” list as we look forward to travelling again.

More e-biking tour content to come.

As I discover more e-biking travel opportunities, additional posts will be available over the coming months.

As well, if you know of a unique cycling experience or follow e-bike bloggers I should connect with, please send these to me through the comment section of this blog.
